Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, and Richmond is going all out. Start with Trunk or Treat on Thursday, float down the canal on a spooky cruise, soak in the glow at Maymont, party at Main Line Brewery, and finish with a live Rocky Horror shadowcast on Sunday. Here are five ways to get out and enjoy RVA.
1. Trunk or Treat at Main Street Station (KIDS)
When: Thursday, October 29, 5-8 PM
Where: Main Street Station, Richmond
Why we love it: Venture Richmond's first-ever fall festival is a free community party with candy, games, music, food and a traffic garden that teaches pedestrian safety. A perfect kickoff to Halloween weekend for little trick-or-treaters.

2. Eerie Canal Halloween Cruises (FAMILY)
When: Friday, October 30 - Sunday, November 1; 20-minute tours leave every 30 minutes from 5-9 PM (last boat 8:30 PM)
Where: Canal Walk Turning Basin, 139 Virginia St., Richmond
Why we love it: Hop a narrated canal boat and hunt for the "Mural Monsters" along the James River and Kanawha Canal. Little ghouls get a candy treat. Just $6 (kids 4 and under free), and best for ages 4 and up.

3. Garden Glow at Maymont (FAMILY)
When: Thursday, October 29, Friday, October 30 and Sunday, November 1 (Saturday, Oct. 31 is an adults-only Halloween night); event closes at 10 PM, final entry 9 PM
Where: Robins Nature Center entrance, 2201 Shields Lake Dr., Richmond 23220
Why we love it: Maymont's after-dark light show turns nine with a new Firefly Field, Light Ladders synced to music and an enhanced laser tunnel over the Japanese Garden. Tickets run about $16-$25 depending on the night; infants are free.

4. RVA Halloween Block Party at Main Line Brewery (21+)
When: Saturday, October 31, 12-10 PM (12-6 PM all ages with a supervising adult; after 6 PM "Halloween After Dark" is 18+, alcohol 21+)
Where: Main Line Brewery, 1603 Ownby Lane, Richmond 23220
Why we love it: An all-day Halloween festival with three rooms, indoor and outdoor areas, two live bands, DJs, firepits, games, costume contests and Halloween drink specials. A free Halloween pilates class kicks things off at 12:30 PM, and parking is free.

5. The Rocky Horror Picture Show Live Shadowcast (ADULTS)
When: Sunday, November 1, 4 PM and 7 PM shows
Where: Coalition Theater, Richmond
Why we love it: Close out Halloween weekend with the cult classic, performed live by Richmond's new "Help Me Mommy" shadowcast with comedians, actors and dancers. Tickets are $15 and prop bags are $5 at the bar. Note: mature themes and partial nudity.
